Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
