Defense Department Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in question included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
