EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
