Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
